Cost
Topstep offers two payment paths. The Standard path costs $49 a month for 50K plus a $149 activation fee when you pass. The No Activation Fee path costs $95 a month with nothing at activation. Passing in month one costs $198 on Standard or $95 on the other path. Standard becomes the cheaper option from about the fourth month.
Alpha has no activation fee on any evaluation tier. Its 50K prices are $129 (Standard), $169 (Zero, though one Alpha page lists $139) and $209 (Advanced) a month. One key difference: Alpha's pages show the same monthly price continuing on the Qualified account after you pass, while Topstep's subscription bills until you pass or cancel. If you keep a funded Alpha account open for several months, include that in your total. Our evaluation cost calculator helps you compare both over the months you expect to need.
Rules
Drawdown
Both use an end-of-day trailing limit that counts open losses in real time. On a 50K account both start $2,000 below the starting balance (Alpha Advanced uses $1,750). Topstep's Maximum Loss Limit locks at the starting balance in the Combine, and in an Express Funded Account it resets to $0 after your first payout. Alpha's limit stops trailing at the starting balance on every account.
Daily loss limit
Topstep's daily loss limit is optional ($1,000 on 50K). If you pick it, hitting it flattens you for the day but is not a rule violation. Choosing it on a No Activation Fee Combine also earns a small monthly discount. Alpha's daily rules depend on the tier: Zero has a $1,000 guard on 50K, Standard adds a limit only once Qualified, and Advanced has none.
Consistency and minimum days
Topstep requires your best Combine day to stay under 55% of the profit target ($1,650 on 50K). There is no stated minimum, and Topstep says you can pass in two days. Alpha's Zero evaluation has no consistency rule and a one-day minimum. Standard uses 50% with two days and Advanced 40% with three. Qualified Zero and Standard accounts then use a 40% rule.
Trading hours
Topstep positions must be flat by 3:10 p.m. CT, so no overnight holds. Alpha's pages did not cover overnight or weekend holding, so confirm it directly before holding past the close.
Payouts
Topstep pays 90/10 with a $125 minimum. On the Standard XFA path you need five winning days of $150 or more and can take up to 50% of the balance, capped at $2,000 on 50K. The Consistency path needs three days with your best day at 40% or less, capped at $3,000 on 50K.
Alpha pays 90% from the first payout. You need five winning days of $200 or more per request, up to four requests a month, each up to 50% of profit. 50K caps are $1,500 (Zero), $3,000 (Standard) and $15,000 (Advanced). Alpha says approved payouts are currently paid within five business days, while Topstep lists one to three business days for internal approval.
Platforms
New Topstep accounts trade only on TopstepX, built by ProjectX, with Quantower able to connect through the ProjectX data feed. Alpha supports AlphaTrader, TradingView via Plus500, WealthCharts, DeepChart and Quantower. Neither firm currently offers NinjaTrader or Tradovate on new accounts.
Who each firm suits
Topstep
Topstep suits disciplined intraday traders who expect to pass fairly quickly and are comfortable on TopstepX. The optional daily limit suits traders who want a built-in stop. It scores 7.6 out of 10 in our rankings.
Alpha Futures
Alpha suits traders who want to pick a tier that matches their style: Zero for a low price and no evaluation consistency rule, Advanced for large payouts with no funded consistency rule. It scores 6.7 out of 10, held back by ongoing monthly billing and conflicting prices on its own pages.
