NinjaTrader and Tradovate are often compared, but they're part of the same business. Both brokerage accounts are held at NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC (NFA ID 0309379, as published by the brokers), and both use the same three commission plans. Tradovate's own pricing page now says its plans include access to the NinjaTrader Desktop, Web and Mobile platforms. So the choice comes down to which account and platform setup suits how you trade. All figures below were checked on each broker's pricing page on November 3, 2026.
Commissions are identical
| Plan | Plan cost | Micro per side | E-mini per side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0.39 | $1.29 |
| Monthly | $99/month | $0.29 | $0.99 |
| Lifetime | $1,499 | $0.09 | $0.59 |
Exchange, clearing and NFA fees are added on top. Source: NinjaTrader and Tradovate pricing pages, November 3, 2026. Tradovate also lists the Lifetime plan as four payments of $499, and both list lower rates for Nano and event contracts.
When the paid plans pay off
Moving from Free to Monthly saves $0.10 per micro side. Two sides per round turn means $0.20 saved per micro contract traded. To recover $99 a month you'd need about 495 micro round turns a month.
The math is friendlier for E-minis. Monthly saves $0.30 per side, or $0.60 per round turn, so it breaks even at about 165 E-mini round turns a month.
| Switch | Saving per round turn | Break-even volume |
|---|---|---|
| Free to Monthly (micros) | $0.20 | About 495 round turns a month |
| Free to Monthly (E-minis) | $0.60 | About 165 round turns a month |
| Free to Lifetime (micros) | $0.60 | About 2,500 round turns in total |
| Free to Lifetime (E-minis) | $1.40 | About 1,070 round turns in total |
Example: a trader doing 10 MES round turns a day for 20 days trades 200 round turns a month. On the Free plan that's $156 in commissions. On Monthly it's $116 plus the $99 fee, or $215. For that trader, the Free plan is cheaper. Only once volume rises well above the break-even point do the paid plans save money.
The Lifetime plan is a different calculation. Compared with paying $99 a month, $1,499 equals roughly 15 months of Monthly fees. If you're sure you'll trade actively for longer than that, and at high volume, Lifetime can make sense. If you're still learning, a large upfront payment is hard to justify.
Margins and minimums
- NinjaTrader lists $50 MES and $500 ES day-trade margins and has no minimum deposit, with a $5 minimum for ACH or debit card transfers.
- Tradovate lists "any funding amount" as its account minimum. Its pricing page shows day-trade margins for some Nano contracts but doesn't clearly list ES or MES margins, so check inside the platform before you trade.
Remember that day-trade margin is the minimum to open a position, not a measure of how much you can afford to lose. See Margin and Leverage in Futures.
The real difference: the platform
- NinjaTrader is known for its desktop platform, with deep charting, add-ons and automated strategies. It also offers web and mobile versions, and supports CQG and Rithmic routing for extra fees.
- Tradovate started as a cloud-based platform, so it runs in a browser and on mobile with the same layout everywhere. Its pricing page also highlights connections to third-party tools such as TradingView.
Because both are now under the NinjaTrader group and share plans, the line between them has narrowed. In practice, traders who want automated strategies and a large add-on ecosystem lean toward NinjaTrader's desktop platform, while traders who switch between devices or prefer a browser setup often start with Tradovate.

Prop firm traders
Many futures prop firms connect through Tradovate or NinjaTrader. For example, Tradeify and My Funded Futures both list NinjaTrader and Tradovate among supported platforms, while new Topstep accounts use TopstepX. If you plan to take an evaluation, learn the platform your firm supports.
Which to choose
Choose NinjaTrader if you want a full desktop platform and automation. Choose Tradovate if you switch between devices or don't want to install software. Either way, start on the Free plan and only upgrade once your monthly volume clears the break-even numbers above.
