Key takeaways
Most CME financial and energy futures trade Sunday 6:00 p.m. ET to Friday 5:00 p.m. ET with a daily break from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET. US index futures see most of their volume during US stock market hours. Scheduled releases can move prices sharply in seconds. Track your results by session.
Futures trade almost around the clock, but not every hour is the same. Volume, volatility and the type of traders in the market change through the day. A setup that works well after the US stock market opens can fail overnight, and a stop that is sensible at 2:00 a.m. can be far too tight at 10:00 a.m. This lesson explains the sessions and why they matter for your risk.
Key points
- Most CME equity index, energy, metals, interest rate and FX futures trade on CME Globex from Sunday 6:00 p.m. ET to Friday 5:00 p.m. ET.
- There is a daily 60-minute maintenance break from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET (4:00 to 5:00 p.m. CT). Grain futures keep shorter hours.
- The trading day is often split into the overnight (Asia) session, the London session and US regular hours.
- US equity index futures see most of their volume during US stock market hours, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.
- Scheduled economic releases and Federal Reserve announcements can move prices many ticks in seconds.
- Prices can gap over the weekend, and a stop does not protect you from a gap.
Nearly 24 hours, five days a week
CME Group publishes most hours in US Central Time. For equity index, energy, metals and Treasury futures, CME's published Globex hours are Sunday to Friday, 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, with a 60-minute break each day starting at 4:00 p.m. CT. In Eastern Time, that is Sunday 6:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m., with a break from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. CME describes FX futures as trading nearly around the clock with the same 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET break. Grain futures such as corn, soybeans and wheat have two shorter sessions instead.
Each session's trade date rolls at the evening open. A trade placed at 7:00 p.m. ET on Monday belongs to Tuesday's trade date. Full details by asset class are in Futures Market Hours and Holiday Schedule, and each contract page lists hours for that contract.
The sessions
- Overnight / Asia (from 6:00 p.m. ET): Asian markets are open. For US index futures this is usually the quietest period, with lower volume and smaller ranges, though news from Asia can still move prices.
- London (from about 3:00 a.m. ET for most of the year): European markets open and volume picks up, especially in currencies, Treasuries and energy.
- US pre-market (about 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. ET): many major US economic reports are released at 8:30 a.m. ET.
- US regular hours (9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET): the US stock market is open. This is when ES and NQ see most of their volume and often their largest moves, especially in the first hour.
- Afternoon and close (4:00 to 5:00 p.m. ET): the stock market has closed but futures trade for another hour before the daily break.
Why the session changes your risk
Volatility affects how far price moves in normal noise. If your stop sits inside that noise, it will be hit for reasons that have nothing to do with your trade idea.
Worked example: same stop, different session
Suppose MES often moves 2 or 3 points in a few minutes overnight, but 8 to 10 points in a few minutes after the 9:30 a.m. open. A 4-point stop on 2 MES risks 4 × $5 × 2 = $40. Overnight, that stop may sit outside normal noise. After the open, the same stop is likely to be hit by an ordinary swing. To keep $40 of risk with a 10-point stop, you would trade fewer contracts: $40 ÷ (10 × $5) = 0.8, which rounds down to 0 MES. That means skipping the trade or accepting more risk with one contract ($50). These ranges are illustrations, not measurements. Measure your own market.
Scheduled news
Economic releases such as the monthly jobs report and CPI inflation data are typically published at 8:30 a.m. ET. Federal Reserve rate decisions are typically announced in the afternoon. These events can move futures several points in seconds, widen the bid-ask spread and cause stop orders to fill with slippage.
Worked example: a news spike
NQ jumps 40 points in the minute after a release. On one NQ, that is 40 × $20 = $800. On one MNQ, it is $80. If your stop was 10 points away and filled 6 points late because of slippage, an NQ loss planned at $200 becomes $320.
Many traders flatten positions before major releases. Some prop firms restrict trading around major news, so check your firm's rules.
Weekend and holiday gaps
Globex closes Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET and reopens Sunday at 6:00 p.m. ET. News over the weekend can make Sunday's first price far from Friday's close. Your stop will fill at the first available price, not at your stop level.
Worked example: a weekend gap
You hold 1 ES long over the weekend with a stop 5 points below Friday's close. Sunday opens 15 points lower. Your stop fills near the open, so you lose about 15 × $50 = $750 instead of the $250 you planned. Holiday sessions can also close early or not trade at all, which creates similar gaps.
The daily maintenance break
From 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET, most Globex futures stop trading. Working orders may stay in the system depending on their time in force, but nothing fills. Prices can open after the break at a different level from where they stopped. Brokers that offer low day-trade margin usually require you to close or meet full margin before this period.
Why it matters
The same strategy can behave very differently overnight and during US hours. Tag every trade in your journal with the session it was taken in, then compare results. You may find that one session produces most of your profit and another produces most of your losses.

Sessions describe when a contract trades each day. Every contract also has an expiry date. Continue with Futures Rollover and Expiration.
Frequently asked questions
What time do futures open on Sunday?
Most CME financial, energy and metals futures open at 6:00 p.m. ET (5:00 p.m. CT) on Sunday. Grain futures open later. Check the contract's CME spec page.
When is the best time to trade ES?
There is no single best time, but ES volume is usually highest during US stock market hours. Higher volume tends to mean tighter spreads and larger moves.
Why does my stop get hit more often after the open?
Ranges are usually wider after 9:30 a.m. ET, so a stop sized for quieter hours can be inside normal noise.
Can I trade during the daily break?
No. Most CME Globex futures don't trade from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET.
Do futures trade on US holidays?
Often with shortened hours, and sometimes not at all. CME publishes a holiday schedule for each holiday. See our market hours lesson for how to read it.
